Does your “tween” or teen dislike her (or his) smile because one or more of her front teeth are moderately uneven? Do the misalignment issues bother your daughter so much that she feels self-conscious when she’s with her friends, classmates and anyone else in person? But don’t sweat it! There’s a chance that she needn’t undergo major dental treatment to eliminate the issue and restore her confidence. A pedodontist will determine if your daughter’s situation can be remedied with odontoplasty.

At the office Ridgewood Valley Pediatric Dentistry, we employ sophisticated technology and advanced techniques to diagnose and treat children’s oral health. We have a solid track record of successfully caring for many patients, and we’re confident we can do the same for your child.

The many types of cosmetic dentistry include odontoplasty (also known as enameloplasty, dental recontouring and tooth reshaping). It’s painless, non-invasive and completed in one appointment! Odontoplasty can give your daughter’s self-image a real boost.

Odontoplasty can make a significant difference in the symmetry of her smile if: one tooth slightly overlaps another, the lengths of her front teeth don’t match, one or more teeth are too pointed, there’s minor crowding or the enamel has bulges.

How it works.

Enamel is a tooth’s thin, see-through outer covering. (Dentin, the hard tissue beneath the enamel, gives teeth their color.) A pediatric dentist would remove small amounts of enamel using a sanding disc or a diamond-tipped drill. He (or she) uses the tool to fine-tune a tooth’s shape, size and/or length. The pedodontist then completes the procedure by polishing the area, and the results are immediate.

Aftercare.

Odontoplasty makes the enamel of the treated tooth/teeth thinner, so your daughter will have to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine. She will need to brush twice daily, and use dental floss and a water flosser before her final brush of the day.

Ask a pedodontist if odontoplasty would benefit your child.
